It has become a word-of-mouth West End hit and is to be turned into the biggest Sheffield film since The Full Monty – but before then you can catch the musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie at Diss Corn Hall.

The story of a boy who wants to go to his school prom in a dress - based on a true story - opened at Sheffield’s Crucible last year before transferring to Shaftesbury Avenue’s Apollo Theatre.

It has won huge acclaim and a cult following. It was announced in May that it will soon be made into a feature film but before that a live performance from the Apollo has been broadcast to more than 500 cinemas and it is being shown in Diss on July 21.

Jamie is 16 and lives on a council estate in Sheffield. He doesn’t quite fit in and is terrified about the future. He is going to be a sensation. Supported by his loving mum and surrounded by his friends, Jamie overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies and steps out of the darkness, into the spotlight.

The story was inspired by a BBC3 documentary called Jamie: Drag Queen at 16. It all started when a 15-year-old boy sent a well-written pitch to a documentary company, asking them to tell his story. Jamie Campbell then found himself in the headlines after he announced that he wanted to wear a dress to his school prom.

Theatre director Jonathan Butterell saw it and was inspired to create a musical. The Sheffield production had only four weeks’ rehearsal – which is no time at all for a new musical – and only 19 performances.

But the reaction was incredible. The audiences loved it, then the critics embraced it and together they sold it out on word of mouth.

With John McCrea playing Jamie, and a cast that includes Josie Walker, Tamsin Carroll, Lucie Shorthouse and Phil Nichol, accompanied by an eight-piece band, the musical is still running at the Apollo Theatre, where it is booking until October 6.

But you can see it in Diss this week
