Splash back to Diss open air swimming galas

Long term proposals are in the offing for a new £9m leisure centre and swimming pool in Diss but here is a splash back to how it used to be.
The current Diss Leisure Centre, on Victoria Road, dates back to the old open air swimming lido which the district council took over in 1974, with a roof being added in the late 1980s.
But though it could be chilly in spring and autumn the open air pool was much loved by generations of swimmers in the warm summer months - not least when it hosted swimming gala.
These pictures from our archives show junior galas in full swing in 1976 - one of the hottest ever summers, so no need to worry about the freezing water! Do you know of the young swimmers?
Diss Otters swimming club still holds its friendly gala at the Diss pool but otherwise has to host competitions in Norwich. Hopefully a new leisure centre will be big enough for them to hold all their events in the town's home pool.
