From a galaxy far, far away…to Diss!

Visitors come to Diss from far afield but it's not often you see a group who could have come from a galaxy far, far away.
Saturday shoppers in Diss town centre found themselves unexpectedly rubbing shoulders with Darth Vader, a group of Imperial Stormtroopers and other characters from Star Wars.
The eye-catching group walked from Diss Mere down Mere Street to Market Place prompting lots of attention, people wanting selfies and children excitedly seeing their favourite characters brought to life.
Not normally known or his sense of humour, Darth Vader even prompted laughs when he slid down the handrail on stairs outside Beales Department Store.
Inside the costumes were members of Norwich Star Wars Club who were taking part in a fundraising open day for Diss and District Athletics Club.
John Peruzzi, club event organiser, said after removing Stormtrooper helmet: “We like to do our bit for charity. Most events we do are for charity and we’ve raised money in the past for the EACH Hospice at Quidenham and Cancer Research. It’s all good fun and we get a great reaction from people especially the kids.
“The club started in 1999 as a collector’s club but then we held toy fairs with people in costumes and it has just taken off from there. We now have about 150 local members but even people in America have joined.”
Proving we like a villain, the characters were mainly from the dark side of the Force — Chewbacca had been due to attend but he had to pull out after breaking his ankle.
